          Insuring sustainability

The unique nature of Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia’s work is that it does not just focus on constructing water service structures. Habitat Ethiopia implements multiple integrated                                                                             activities to ensure sustainability of projects. Urban Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Initiative, which was implemented to serve Shewa Robit community in north Shewa Zone, includes tree plantation campaign as its components. The purpose of tree plantation is to protect water sources and water service facilities constructed by Habitat Ethiopia from erosion. The campaign staged in July 2022 under the theme ‘Let’ s conserve ground water though afforestation’.

   Main Components of the project

    • A reservoir with the capacity of 500 cubic meter
    • pressure and distribution lines
    • Pater points and container seat for water Kiosk
    • Water source development: drilling of boreholes, spring development
    • Installation of submersible pump and diesel generator
    • Community led total sanitation
    • Hygiene awareness creation and capacity building
The three-year project aims to improve access to safe water and sanitation for more than 41,000 people, most of them are affected by various forms of vulnerabilities.
As the continuation of WASH initiatives in Shewa Robit, an additional 300 cubic meter reservoir is being construct to serve more than 14,000 residents in the town.
