Urban Slum Upgrading and WASH Project
This multi-year Urban Slum Upgrading Project was started in the city of Addis Ababa in July 2017. With this project Habitat Ethiopia partners with vulnerable families who live in poverty to become homeowners and get access to improved sanitation and safe water.
The project activities were renovation of houses, construction of communal toilets, communal water points, walkways and ditches. The project helped ensured sustainable use of the facilities and creating healthy living environment through hygiene and sanitation training and promotion of saving practices.
At the end of the project, 800 families (3,700 individuals) in two Woredas(communities) who were suffering from lack of adequate housing and sanitation facilities started to live in healthy living environment.
Disaster Risk Reduction and Response-WASH Resilience Building Project
Initially, Habitat Ethiopia responded to the national call to assist families affected by drought through Disaster Risk Reduction Project. Currently, the the scope the project has been expanded to WASH resilience building to help families get access to safe water and improved sanitation. Community hygiene awareness creation and school WASH was also part of the project. Currently, the project is implemented in Oromia Region, Negele Arsi District.

Vulnerable Group Housing and WASH Project-Oromia Region
This was a two-year project targeting vulnerable families living in poverty housing with poor sanitation conditions in five towns of Oromiya Regional State namely: Adola, Adama, Ambo, Jimma and Shashemene. Habitat Ethiopia has partnered with target families, local administrations and other stake holders for successful implementation and greater impact. The target population were vulnerable people affected by various forms of disability including leprosy, and poverty related social problems.
The project activities were reconstruction/renovation of dilapidated houses for vulnerable and leprosy affected families in Ambo and low income families in Jimma, construction and renovation of communal toilets in Adola and Jimma, provision of hygiene training for beneficiaries and community members, and enhancing capacity of Adama and Shashemene town administrations in solid waste management through providing solid waste trucks and other tools.
Vulnerable Group Housing and WASH Project-Amhara Region
Habitat Ethiopia partnered with target families in five towns of Amhara Regional State: Debre Markos, Bahir-Dar, Debre Berhan, Kombolcha and Dessie. The activities in the integrated vulnerable group housing and WASH project included construction of new houses, water reservoir, communal water points and installation of pipe lines. Alongside hygiene training for community members, water management committees were organized in Dessie town.
The two-year project also aimed at improving sanitation conditions in Debre Markos town through solid waste management, providing waste disposal tools and training of youth who engage in solid waste collection.

COVID-19 Emergency Response
Following the outbreak of COVID-19, Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia helped 1,140 families (5,500 individuals) receive food items (flour and edible oil), soap and face masks. More than 3,600 individuals attended hygiene and sanitation awareness raising training which also included information on protection of COVID-19.
