Urban Resilience Building Assistance Network (URBAN) Project in Addis Ababa
The URBAN project aims at build resilience of community by constructing 2,155-meter drainage ditches and protect 365 households (1095 individuals) from flood in slum areas of Addis Ababa. Apart from mitigating risks of flood, we work to upgrade the grey water disposal systems. The project also improves sanitary practices and personal hygiene through providing awareness raising training for about 4,000 households (20,000 individuals).
A very essential part of the project is developing multidimensional participatory hotspot map to further enhance the resilience of the community to risk of flood that can also exposes them to waterborne communicable diseases. The project creates green spaces with plants which turn the area to clean living environment.
Flood risk index development study will be conducted to have hotspot index document for the city. The study document helps identify highly vulnerable areas, recommend mitigation mechanisms and design other disaster mitigation projects.
Benefits for families and community:
- Flood hotspot index study documents will help design other projects.
- The community will take action considering the outlined mitigation measures.
- Communities will acquire knowledge on WASH
- Clean and healthy living environment.
To make the project successful and sustainable Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia follows collaborative approach engaging partners, particularly Addis Ababa city finance, women, children and social affairs departments and Lideta, Gullele and Akaki Kality sub cities.
