Lege Tafo-Lege Dadi town is one of the towns in Oromia Regional State where underprivileged  communities live.  The population of the town is 127,000. More than half of the residents live in poverty and unsanitary environment, and half of the population does not have access to tap water.

Girls are more prone to challenges related to lack of water and sanitation, both at home and at school in the town. School girls did not have access to proper toilets. Female and male students had used the same toilet which was not comfortable for privacy of female students. Inadequate access to improved sanitation facilities and lack of sanitary pads negatively affect girls’ enrolment and academic performance.

As part of initiatives to build on HFHE’s previous WASH project at Waberi Primary and Secondary Schools in Laga-Tafo town, Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia recently helped enhance participation of girls in awareness raising campaign and promote the concept of ‘Volunteerism for Development’ among young girls and boys.

Our school campaign served as an inspiring initiative for the students to convey key messages on healthy and decent sanitation and sensitize challenges girls face pertaining to WASH through artwork which included drama, traditional music and poems.

Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia provided sanitary pads and other kits for schoolgirls at the campaign event.
