28 Families Celebrate a New Beginning in Dire Dawa
In partnership with Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia, the Dire Dawa City Administration, and the local community, 28 families have transitioned into safe and decent housing. The families moved into their new homes during a colorful and joyous home dedication ceremony attended by Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, senior leaders from the Habitat for Humanity Africa Area Office, community members, and high-ranking government officials.
For years, these families lived in slum-like conditions without access to clean water, sanitation, or electricity. Many households are female-headed, include persons living with disabilities, or have elderly members—facing precarious livelihoods and significant health risks.
Families also benefit from improved access to clean water and sanitation, energy-efficient cooking solutions, secure land tenure, tailored livelihood support, life skills training, and psychosocial assistance.
For Aysha (second from left to right), one of the new homeowners, the house represents a foundation of hope.
“Today is a new beginning for me and my children. This home is a place where my family can live with dignity. I am already planning to start a small fruit business that will help support my family,” she shared.
While celebrating this milestone, Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, emphasized the broader mission:
“While we are proud of this progress, we also recognize that far too many people still live without decent housing. That is why we remain committed to working alongside governments, communities, and partners to create lasting solutions.”
Jonathan added that the collaborative efforts among families, the Dire Dawa City Administration, and Habitat for Humanity will serve as a model for building homes across Ethiopia.
Reaffirming this commitment, Yitna Tekaligne, National Director and Representative to the African Union, stated:
“Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia will continue to partner with the Dire Dawa City Administration and the community to reach families living in inadequate shelter.”
