Re-united family

Sultan Rashid and his wife Rehana lived in Lideta sub city of Addis Ababa for the past 20 years. For the couples, life wasn’t easy particularly to raise their four children without adequate housing and stable income. Initially, they lived in rental houses, but financial constraints forced them to move to plastic shelter on the roadside. Sultan’s illness prevents him from pursuing job to add income to minimize the family’s financial strain. His wife Rehana earns a meagre income from a small job. She has to cover Sultan’s medication, children’s school and other expenses for the family.

The family used to live in the plastic shelter facing life-threatening challenges. The plastic shack offered little protection for couples and the four kids. It barely accommodates six family members and couldn’t shield them from the harsh weather, exposing them to rain and cold. The unsanitary conditions around the shack affected the health of the children.

As the housing condition was deteriorating, exposing the children to health risks, Rehana left the family with her younger child, leaving the rest in the shack. Sultan mentioned how lack of adequate shelter created instability accompanied by separation, illness and insecurity. Sultan said, “Moving from rented home to a plastic shelter with four kids, combined with the burden of taking care of the children and myself eventually put my wife under stress.’’
With generous support from Leo Lion Foundation, Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia constructed new house for sultan and his family. Sultan and the three children moved to the new house in May 2024. His wife Rehana joined her husband and children in the new house. Sultan said that the new house signifies a transformative chapter in the family’s life offering them a sense of stability, security, unity and hope after years of hardship and uncertainty.

For families who partner with Habitat for Humanity, home is more than just a building; it is a place of safety, dignity, and hope. Together with our partners, we help families who have no other options to build their homes.

'Thanks to Habitat, now I'm very happy. The new house reunites my family, my wife came back home. Our new house is not just a shelter; it is a place where our children can grow healthy and look forward to a bright future'- Homeowner Sultan.
